The Life Cycle of The Fireflies Species (Pteroptyx Tener)

Life Cycle

The Egg

The Larva

The Pupa

The adults fireflies of Kampung Kuantan are easily seen at night because of the beautiful flashes of light they produce. However, very few people are likely to realise what the firefly is like before it matures into a winged adult. In fact, one may be surprised to find out that this insect is a formidable predator in the early stage for its life.

The life cycle of the firefly begins with mating. An adult female firefly may mate more than once in its lifetime. Once it has mated, it is ready to lay fertilised eggs. The eggs are laid among the vegetation that grows on the riverbanks and are usually hidden in crevices in the soil.

HOW MAKES A FIREFLY GLOW?....

..Twinkly Sky..

BEREMBANG TREE

From about sundown to midnight, no less than million of fireflies can be seen flashing their "lights"..The locals here will tell you that the best time to see the fireflies is during the new moon, about one to four hours after sunset..These beatiful creatures mainly congregate on trees with open foliage..The Berembang tree "Sonneratia Caseolaris" for example is popular with the fireflies..This particular tree dots the rims of Kuala Selangor River..Here at Kampung Kuantan, you can take a short sampan (traditional Malay boat) ride for an up close and personal experience..

FIREFLY
The species found here at Kampung Kuantan is the "Pteroptyxtener". What makes this creature so unique is their ability to produce twinkling bright lights at a rate of one twinkle every 3 seconds..When thousands of these fireflies gather on the trees, their shining & glittering mass appears like shimmering stars in truly ethereal surroundings..

..Firefly In The Sky..

.."Driving down the beaten path, a narrow lane flanked by oil palm plantations pulls up on your left and right, opening into something somewhat magical that is in store for you"..

Have you ever seen a firefly?

These creatures that fly above water twinkle and gleam in the night in what is unmistakably light against the stark dark of its backdrop..There are only two remaining firefly habitats that we know..One is the Kampung Kuantan Fireflies Sanctuary and then the other is the less accessible Amazon River in Brazil..

Not many people know of the former although it is one of only two places in the world that is home to the firefly, also known locally in the Malay language as "Kelip-Kelip"..Located not far from the little bustling town of Kuala Selangor, fireflies still congregate in this habitat..
